Is family mediation free?
By Elisabet Anderson
Family mediation may be free for some people. Public funding is available for family mediation through the Legal Aid Agency. To work out if you might qualify for legal aid go to www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid or put ‘legal aid calculator’ into an internet search engine, such as Google.
If you qualify for legal aid, you may also be able to receive a limited amount of help and advice from a solicitor. This can be helpful if you have decided on a settlement in mediation, and you would like some legal advice on it. It is also possible to get assistance from a solicitor with drafting a consent order. Your mediator will be able to give you more information about this.
If you do not qualify for legal aid, you will have to pay for mediation. Mediators tend to charge on an hourly rate, although some offer a fixed prices for a mediation session and related work. It is important to ask before-hand so that you know what you are paying for.
